Several areas across Luzon are bracing for significant rainfall on Thursday afternoon as the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, moves across the archipelago, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
In a weather advisory issued at 2 p.m., the state weather bureau indicated that light to moderate rains with occasional heavy showers are expected to impact portions of the main northern island during the afternoon hours of Aug. 20.
The southwest monsoon is a seasonal weather pattern that regularly affects the Philippines during the summer months, bringing moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor further weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.
Pagesa typically issues regular weather advisories to keep the public informed of developing weather patterns and associated hazards. Those in vulnerable low-lying areas or near water systems are urged to take appropriate precautions against potential flooding.
