Southwest monsoon wreaks P13.17 million damage on Calabarzon farms

The enhanced southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, has left a trail of agricultural damage across the Calabarzon region, with the National Irrigation Administration confirming significant losses on Wednesday. A total of 502 hectares of farmland cultivated by 532 farmers were affected by the weather phenomenon, resulting in estimated crop losses valued at P13.17 million.

Roberto Dela Cruz, regional manager of the NIA in Region IV-A, disclosed the extent of the damage during a briefing in Lucena City. The affected agricultural areas span multiple provinces within the Calabarzon region, encompassing parts of Laguna and neighboring localities vulnerable to monsoon conditions.

The habagat, which typically brings heavy rainfall and strong winds during the southwest monsoon season, has historically posed challenges to farming communities in the region. Agricultural officials have urged farmers to implement protective measures and seek assistance through available government support programs for disaster-affected agricultural operations.

The NIA continues to assess the full extent of damage and coordinate with local government units to provide relief and rehabilitation assistance to affected farming communities in the region.
