Soybean oil tanker overturns in Bhopal, triggering mass scavenging

A tanker loaded with refined soybean oil overturned at the VIP Road intersection in Bhopal at approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday, triggering an unusual response from residents in the area. The vehicle was carrying approximately 35 tonnes of oil at the time of the accident.

Within minutes of the oil spilling onto the road, between 300 and 400 people descended on the site, according to witnesses. Many arrived with containers, vessels, and vehicles to collect the spilled commodity. Video footage from the scene showed crowds gathering to salvage the oil, filling buckets, drums, and other receptacles with the refined product.

Authorities estimated the value of the lost cargo at roughly Rs 55 lakh. The circumstances surrounding the tanker's overturn were not immediately clear. The incident has raised questions about both road safety and the response mechanisms in place for managing such spillages in urban areas.

Local officials were expected to investigate the accident and assess the extent of the spillage and its impact on the roadway.
