Spain, Morocco had advance warning of Ceuta migrant surge

Spanish intelligence services and their Moroccan counterparts were notified of coordinated online calls for a major migrant crossing into Ceuta just hours before the event occurred, according to newly declassified documents reviewed by regional authorities.

The warning came as social media campaigns actively encouraged migrants to attempt entry into the Spanish North African enclave. Despite the advance notice, authorities were unable to prevent what became one of the largest unauthorized border crossings in recent years, with tens of thousands of people crossing from Morocco into Ceuta.
