Spanish police open manslaughter inquiry after footballer's on-field death

Spain's National Police confirmed Tuesday that proceedings have been opened into the circumstances surrounding de Miguel's death, with prosecutors also becoming involved in the inquiry. The incident occurred during added time in a second-division match between Tenerife and Andorra on Monday.

De Miguel was contesting for possession near midfield when Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed into him, striking the forward in the chest. The collision triggered cardiac arrest, with de Miguel subsequently unable to be revived despite immediate medical intervention on the pitch.

Tenerife announced his death on Tuesday, confirming the 30-year-old's passing. The opening of a manslaughter investigation indicates Spanish authorities are examining whether the goalkeeper's actions contributed unlawfully to the fatal outcome.

The incident has prompted scrutiny of player safety protocols during competitive matches. Such on-field medical emergencies remain rare in professional football, though several high-profile cardiac incidents have occurred in recent years across European leagues.
