Speaker should oversee MP fund allocations, says Shahidan
The Arau member of parliament has called for Parliament to take direct control of funding distributed to lawmakers, arguing the arrangement would guarantee fairer treatment for opposition representatives.

Datuk Shahidan Kassim has proposed shifting oversight of parliamentary allocations from the executive to the Speaker's office, citing concerns about potential disparities in how funds are distributed among government and opposition MPs.
The Arau MP argued that placing the Speaker in charge of fund distribution would create a more transparent and equitable system, ensuring all lawmakers receive fair treatment regardless of their political affiliation.
Under current arrangements, parliamentary allocations are managed through executive channels. Shahidan's proposal seeks to establish Parliament as an independent arbiter of these resources, reducing potential for politically-motivated decisions that could disadvantage opposition members.
The call reflects broader concerns within Malaysia's legislature about resource parity and institutional independence. Centralising fund management under the Speaker's authority would position Parliament's highest official as a neutral guardian of lawmakers' entitlements.
The proposal adds to ongoing discussions about parliamentary reform and the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches in Malaysia's government structure.
