GEORGE TOWN — Authorities have ordered the formation of a special task force to investigate a collision between a passenger ferry and cargo vessel that occurred in Penang waters on Sunday night. The Port Authority Commission made the announcement on Monday, designating the unit to examine the circumstances surrounding the maritime incident. The task force will be responsible for gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and determining the sequence of events that led to the collision. Maritime officials are examining whether factors such as weather conditions, visibility, vessel navigation, and adherence to shipping lanes contributed to the accident. Initial reports indicate both vessels were operating in the busy shipping corridor between Penang island and the mainland when the collision occurred. The investigation will also assess whether safety protocols were followed and whether either vessel was equipped with proper navigation and communication systems. Authorities have not yet released information regarding casualties or vessel damage sustained in the incident.
