Former Rajya Sabha Member T.G. Venkatesh on Monday called for greater student participation in sports, underscoring their role in complementing academic pursuits. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the South Zone–1 CBSE Archery Championship, Venkatesh articulated the multifaceted benefits of athletic engagement for young learners.
According to Venkatesh, sporting activities serve purposes that extend well beyond physical conditioning. He noted that regular participation in sports cultivates mental well-being while simultaneously building critical life skills such as confidence, discipline, concentration and perseverance—qualities that prove invaluable in academic and professional spheres alike.
The remarks come as educational institutions across India increasingly recognise the importance of a balanced curriculum that integrates physical education with traditional academics. Sports programmes, particularly those sanctioned by boards like the CBSE, provide structured platforms for students to develop both competitive spirit and teamwork.
Venkatesh's emphasis on holistic student development reflects a broader educational philosophy that views sports not merely as extracurricular activities, but as integral components of comprehensive learning. The archery championship, spanning the southern zone, provides one such avenue for students to hone athletic skills while building character.
