Spotify Tightens Family Plan Rules With Address Verification System
Spotify is enforcing stricter controls on its Premium Family Plan through address verification and QR code authentication to prevent unauthorized password sharing among subscribers outside the same household.

Spotify is implementing stricter controls over its Premium Family Plan to curb unauthorized password sharing, marking an escalation in the platform's efforts to protect subscription revenues. The service will now require members to verify their primary address and use QR code authentication to confirm their household membership.
Users who do not comply with the new verification requirements will face account suspension of up to 12 months, according to the platform's updated policy. The measures are designed to ensure that Family Plan subscribers—which typically allows four to six accounts under one billing arrangement—are genuine household members rather than friends or distant contacts sharing login credentials.
The crackdown reflects Spotify's broader strategy to monetize its user base more effectively. The company has previously indicated that password sharing represents a significant revenue opportunity, with millions of users accessing accounts without separate subscriptions. Similar enforcement measures have been rolled out across multiple markets as part of a global initiative.
Family Plan subscribers will receive notifications about the changes and be given a grace period to complete the verification process. Spotify has not publicly specified the exact timeline for rollout in India, though the company typically implements major policy changes across regions within similar timeframes.
