Sri Lanka adopts decade-long social protection framework through 2035
Sri Lanka's Cabinet has approved a National Social Protection Strategy designed to implement the country's National Social Protection Policy over the next decade. The framework, unveiled in mid-September, directs all government ministries to coordinate efforts in rolling out comprehensive social protection measures.

The Cabinet of Ministers has endorsed a National Social Protection Strategy that will guide the implementation of Sri Lanka's National Social Protection Policy from 2026 through 2035. The strategy was presented to Cabinet on September 15, 2025, following initial policy approval granted during a Cabinet meeting on July 22, 2024.
The ten-year action plan represents a structured approach to social protection across the country, with the Cabinet instructing all ministry secretaries to initiate necessary actions to bring the strategy into effect. The comprehensive framework is intended to address gaps in the existing social protection system and ensure coordinated delivery of services across government agencies.
The strategy comes at a time when Sri Lanka is seeking to strengthen its social safety net amid ongoing economic challenges facing the nation. Officials have indicated that the implementation of the framework will require inter-ministerial coordination and resource allocation across multiple sectors to achieve the policy objectives.
Details regarding specific programmes and funding allocations under the ten-year plan are expected to be announced as individual ministries develop their implementation roadmaps in accordance with the Cabinet directive.
