Sri Lanka allocates $14 million as El Niño drought deepens across region

Sri Lanka's government has earmarked $14 million to address acute water shortages resulting from El Niño-induced drought conditions affecting the island nation. The allocation will support emergency water distribution programmes providing families with approximately 75 litres every two to three days as local water supplies dwindle.

The funding underscores the growing pressure on regional governments to respond to weather extremes amplified by the global El Niño phenomenon. South and Southeast Asian nations have begun implementing contingency measures and emergency relief programmes as forecasters warn of intensified drought, flooding, and temperature fluctuations expected throughout the climate pattern's duration.

Water scarcity has emerged as a critical concern for agricultural and urban populations across the region. Sri Lanka's intervention aims to sustain basic household needs while authorities work to maintain essential services during the extended dry period.
