Officials from Sri Lanka and Romania held their sixth round of bilateral political consultations in Bucharest, where both nations committed to reinforcing protective measures for the significant Sri Lankan workforce operating within Romania's borders.
The discussions centered on approximately 26,000 Sri Lankan nationals currently residing and working in Romania. Both governments agreed to explore expanded cooperation frameworks aimed at improving employment conditions and worker welfare in the European nation.
Among the key initiatives discussed were the establishment of formal Government-to-Government recruitment arrangements, which officials believe will provide enhanced oversight and protection for Sri Lankan workers entering the Romanian labour market. Such arrangements are intended to ensure compliance with employment standards and facilitate smoother worker transitions.
The consultations also addressed social security provisions and broader employment cooperation between the two nations. Both countries signaled their commitment to developing mechanisms that would safeguard the rights and wellbeing of Sri Lankan workers while strengthening bilateral ties in the employment sector.
The sixth round of political consultations underscores both nations' dedication to addressing the needs of migrant workers, a significant population in Romania's labour market and a key consideration in Sri Lanka's foreign employment policy.
