The contract has been secured by a joint venture between local firm Ceylex and Chinese company Xingneng, according to official announcements. The battery storage system will be installed in the Kolonnawa area, a key location within the island's power distribution network.

Grid-scale battery storage projects have become increasingly important for countries across South Asia seeking to balance electricity supply and demand. The technology allows utilities to store excess power generated during peak production periods and discharge it when demand rises, improving grid stability and reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based generation.

The Kolonnawa facility is expected to enhance Sri Lanka's capacity to manage renewable energy sources more effectively, including solar and wind power. Energy officials have identified battery storage as a critical component of the country's transition towards cleaner electricity generation.

The project comes as Sri Lanka continues efforts to upgrade its power infrastructure following economic challenges in recent years. The investment signals ongoing commitment to modernising the national grid and supporting the integration of sustainable energy sources into the electricity system.
