Sri Lanka braces for heavy rainfall across multiple provinces

Enhanced showery conditions are forecast to develop across Sri Lanka from this evening onwards, according to weather officials. The Department of Meteorology attributed the anticipated rainfall to an atmospheric disturbance forming in the lower atmosphere in the vicinity of the island.

The Northern, North-central, Central, Eastern, North-western and Uva provinces are expected to experience the heaviest precipitation, with some localities potentially receiving up to 100 millimetres of rainfall. Residents in these regions have been advised to remain alert to weather updates.

Beyond the rainfall, meteorological authorities also cautioned that misty conditions are expected to develop across affected areas. The combination of heavy showers and reduced visibility may impact travel and daily activities, particularly in vulnerable regions.

The forecast was issued at 05:30 a.m. on 20 October 2026 by the Department of Meteorology. Authorities advised the public to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather developments throughout the forecast period.
