Sri Lanka CAA cracks down on free plastic bag distribution by retailers

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has issued a stern warning to retailers across Sri Lanka regarding the distribution of free plastic bags, commonly known as 'sili-sili' bags, to consumers during transactions.

Under Direction No. 95 issued by the CAA, traders are prohibited from providing these bags without charge when selling merchandise. The authority has made clear that non-compliance with the directive will result in legal action against offending retailers.

The move is part of broader consumer protection regulations designed to ensure fair trading practices and environmental responsibility. By restricting free plastic bag distribution, authorities aim to discourage excessive plastic consumption while promoting sustainable shopping habits among consumers.

Retailers who continue to offer complimentary bags risk facing penalties and legal consequences. The CAA has called on all commercial establishments, from small shops to large retail chains, to adhere to the new directive and familiarize themselves with the regulations to avoid violations.

Consumers are advised to bring their own reusable bags when shopping, while retailers are encouraged to promote environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastic bags.
