Sri Lanka confirms over 100,000 dengue cases in 2026

Sri Lanka has recorded more than 100,000 cases of dengue fever in 2026, according to health officials tracking the disease outbreak across the country. The figure represents a substantial increase in dengue cases compared to previous years and has prompted heightened surveillance and response efforts from the island's public health sector.

The dengue outbreak has affected multiple districts, with cases reported in both urban and rural areas. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the dengue virus, thrives in warm, tropical climates and breeding sites including stagnant water in households and surrounding communities.

Dengue fever symptoms include sudden onset of fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash. While most cases resolve without serious complications, severe dengue can develop into a life-threatening condition requiring hospitalization. Health authorities have advised residents to seek medical attention promptly if symptoms develop.

Public health officials have launched awareness campaigns encouraging residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by removing stagnant water from properties and using protective measures such as insect repellent and nets.
