Sri Lanka Court Sentences 15 Men to 220 Years for 2019 Easter Bombings

A Sri Lankan court has handed down lengthy sentences totalling 220 years against 15 men convicted in relation to the coordinated bombings that struck churches and hotels across the island nation on Easter Sunday 2019. The three-judge bench determined that 14 of the accused were guilty on all charges brought against them, including murder, conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, and the unlawful possession of firearms and explosives under the country's Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The 2019 attacks, which unfolded over several hours on April 21, left 260 people dead and hundreds more injured, marking one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in South Asia. The bombings targeted three churches—St. Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo, and Zion Church in Batticaloa—as well as luxury hotels including the Shangri-La, Kingsbury, and Cinnamon Grand in the capital.

The conviction represents a significant milestone in the judicial process following the attacks. Investigators had linked the bombings to a local militant group with suspected international connections. The sentences reflect the severity with which Sri Lankan courts have treated those held responsible for the violence.
