Sri Lanka economy recovers, but household finances remain under strain

While Sri Lanka's economy has returned to pre-crisis levels, the World Bank warns that household incomes and employment gains have not kept pace with the broader recovery. The gap between macroeconomic improvements and household welfare presents a key challenge as the country transitions from recovery to sustained transformation.

Sri Lanka's economy has reached a significant milestone by returning to pre-crisis output levels, according to the World Bank Group's latest Development Update released this week. However, the international lender cautioned that the recovery remains incomplete and unevenly distributed across the economy and population.

The World Bank's twice-yearly economic outlook, titled "From Recovery to Transformation," highlights a critical divergence between headline economic growth and the lived experience of ordinary Sri Lankans. While aggregate economic indicators have improved, household incomes and labour market outcomes continue to lag behind the pace of the broader economic rebound.

The disparity underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in Sri Lanka's recovery. Many households have yet to regain income levels lost during the acute phase of the economic crisis, and employment quality and wage growth remain subdued compared to the pre-crisis period. This uneven recovery pattern suggests that benefits of economic expansion have not been equitably distributed across all segments of society.

The World Bank's assessment comes as Sri Lanka navigates the transition from emergency stabilisation measures to longer-term structural reforms. Policymakers face the dual challenge of maintaining macroeconomic stability while addressing the immediate welfare needs of households still recovering from the crisis. The bank's outlook indicates that inclusive growth policies will be essential for ensuring that economic recovery translates into tangible improvements in living standards across the population.
