Sri Lanka enforces mandatory safety standards for imported vehicle tyres

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, acting in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, has formally enacted regulations requiring all imported passenger motor car and three-wheeler tyres to meet newly established safety and quality standards.

The mandatory standards represent an effort to enhance vehicle safety on Sri Lankan roads by ensuring that only tyres meeting specified technical requirements can be imported into the country. The regulations were introduced through an official gazette notification under the framework of the Import and Export Control Regulations.

The enforcement of these standards applies to all tyre imports going forward, effectively creating a gatekeeping mechanism at the country's borders. Importers and traders in the automotive sector are expected to ensure compliance with the new requirements when bringing tyres into Sri Lanka.

The initiative falls under the broader purview of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, signalling government commitment to regulating the automotive supply chain and protecting consumers through standardized product quality controls.
