Sri Lanka extends landslide warnings as adverse weather persists

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has extended a landslide early warning system in response to prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting parts of the country. The alert, which took effect from 4:00 p.m. on 9 December, will remain active until 4:00 p.m. on 10 December.

Divisional Secretariat divisions across the Kegalle district and several other administrative areas have been placed under the warning as a precautionary measure. The NBRO issued the alert based on meteorological forecasts indicating continuing rainfall and atmospheric conditions conducive to landslide risk.

Residents in the affected zones have been advised to exercise caution and remain alert during the warning period. The NBRO's extension of the alert underscores the elevated risk posed by the current weather pattern across vulnerable terrain in these districts.

Authorities have recommended that communities in landslide-prone areas monitor local weather updates and heed any directives issued by disaster management officials. The warning system is part of Sri Lanka's broader early alert framework designed to mitigate risks from natural hazards during adverse weather events.
