Sri Lanka's government expects to recover approximately Rs9.7 billion in Treasury spending on the Colombo Port City project through its initial land lease arrangement, signaling progress in generating revenue from the ambitious urban development initiative.

The lease agreement represents the first commercial transaction of its kind for the Port City, which has faced scrutiny over its financial viability and the scale of public investment required for infrastructure and preliminary development.

Government officials view the land lease as validation of the project's commercial potential and an important step toward offsetting the substantial upfront costs borne by the state. The recovery of nearly Rs10 billion would represent a meaningful return on the Treasury's investment to date.

The Port City project, developed in partnership with China Communications Construction Company, remains a centerpiece of the government's infrastructure and economic development strategy. Revenue generation through land leases and commercial activities is expected to continue as the development progresses and attracts foreign and domestic investors.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of monetizing state assets and recovering public investment through strategic land sales and long-term lease agreements as part of broader fiscal consolidation efforts.
