Sri Lanka introduces mandatory music licensing for public and private events

Event organisers in Sri Lanka must now secure music licences before playing songs at weddings, private parties, corporate events, DJ shows, and commercial venues including banks and supermarkets, according to newly gazetted regulations.
The Association of Creators and Publishers of Sri Lanka (ACPOSL) issued the regulations under the oversight of the National Intellectual Property Office as part of measures to safeguard intellectual property rights. The licensing requirement applies broadly across both public and private event categories, signalling a comprehensive approach to music rights protection.
The regulations represent an effort to ensure creators and publishers receive appropriate compensation when their work is performed at venues and events. Commercial establishments such as retail outlets and financial institutions are among those now required to comply with the new licensing framework.
The gazetted requirements follow global trends toward stricter intellectual property enforcement in the music industry. Event organisers and venue managers are expected to familiarise themselves with the new licensing procedures to ensure compliance.
