Authorities have established a specialized enforcement unit to target smoke-emitting vehicles across the island, part of efforts to improve air quality and reduce vehicular emissions.

Sri Lankan authorities have launched an 'Emission Eye' unit focused on identifying and penalizing vehicles that emit excessive smoke and pollutants on roadways. The initiative represents a targeted approach to combating air pollution caused by aging vehicles and poorly maintained engines that fail emission standards.

The specialized unit will operate across major thoroughfares and urban centers, with enforcement personnel trained to identify non-compliant vehicles through visual assessment of exhaust emissions. Vehicles found to exceed permissible pollution thresholds will face regulatory action, including fines and mandatory repair or decommissioning orders.

The crackdown aligns with growing public health concerns over air quality deterioration in urban areas, particularly Colombo and other major cities. Transportation sector emissions represent a significant contributor to the island's overall air pollution, with diesel and petrol-powered vehicles without proper emission controls accounting for a substantial proportion.

Authorities have indicated that the enforcement initiative will operate on an ongoing basis, with regular patrols and checkpoints established at strategic locations. Vehicle owners have been advised to ensure their automobiles meet current emission standards and undergo regular maintenance to comply with regulations.

The move follows increased international pressure on South Asian nations to adopt stricter environmental standards and reduce vehicular pollution contributing to broader regional air quality challenges.
