Sri Lanka has commenced operations of its inaugural 10 megawatt battery energy storage system, signalling the country's entry into large-scale energy storage technology. The facility represents a critical infrastructure addition as the island nation accelerates its shift towards renewable energy generation.

According to a National People's Power (NPP) Member of Parliament, the project addresses long-standing challenges related to grid stability and the intermittency of renewable power sources. Battery storage systems allow utilities to store excess energy generated during peak production periods and dispatch it during high-demand hours, improving overall grid efficiency.

The deployment of utility-scale BESS technology is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based generation and provide a more flexible, responsive power system. Energy storage solutions have become increasingly vital as countries expand their renewable energy portfolios, enabling better integration of solar and wind power.
