The pilot project for Sri Lanka's driving licence demerit points system has been officially launched, marking a significant step towards enhancing road discipline and reducing traffic violations across the country.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake disclosed the launch during a Ministerial Consultative Committee meeting on transport matters. The new system is designed to penalise drivers who repeatedly breach road regulations, creating a structured approach to managing traffic offences.
Under the demerit points framework, drivers would accumulate points for various traffic violations. The system aims to encourage safer driving practices by imposing progressive penalties as drivers accumulate demerit points on their licences.
The pilot phase will allow authorities to test and refine the system before its full nationwide implementation. Officials expect the initiative to contribute to reducing road accidents and improving overall traffic compliance among motorists.
