The Ministry of Digital Economy has introduced the experimental scheme to create a structured penalty framework for motorists committing traffic offences on Sri Lankan roads. Under the system, drivers will face point deductions corresponding to the gravity of their violations, with the framework intended to encourage safer driving practices across the country.
During the pilot phase, the ministry clarified that no actual deduction of points will take place, allowing the system to be tested and refined without imposing immediate consequences on drivers. This approach enables authorities to assess the effectiveness of the demerit structure and identify any necessary adjustments before full implementation.
The 18-month trial period will provide crucial data on how the system functions in real-world conditions and its impact on driver behaviour. Officials will use this timeframe to evaluate compliance rates and gather feedback from both road users and traffic enforcement personnel.
The demerit points system represents part of broader efforts by the digital economy ministry to modernise traffic management and enhance road safety standards. The project aligns with international best practices adopted by numerous countries to reduce traffic accidents and improve overall road discipline among motorists.
