Sri Lanka has officially launched a nationwide QR payment adoption programme designed to encourage merchants and consumers to embrace digital payment methods. The initiative, branded as a Lucky Draw, forms part of broader government efforts to modernise the country's payment infrastructure and reduce cash-based transactions.
The scheme will distribute Rs. 51 million in cash prizes among more than 6,000 winners selected through the incentive programme. Participants engaging in QR-enabled transactions are eligible for the draw, which aims to make digital payments more appealing to both businesses and the general public.
The Lucky Draw represents a strategic push to accelerate digital payment adoption across Sri Lanka's retail and service sectors. By offering tangible financial rewards, authorities hope to drive consumer participation and encourage merchants to install QR payment infrastructure at their establishments.
The programme aligns with wider regional trends in South Asia towards digital financial inclusion and modernisation of payment systems. Officials view the initiative as a transitional measure to familiarise the public with contactless payment technologies while building confidence in digital transaction methods.
