Citizens and businesses in Sri Lanka must now produce a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) when conducting several essential transactions, effective from November 1, the Department of Inland Revenue announced.
The mandatory TIN requirement applies to opening accounts at banks and other financial institutions, obtaining approval for building plans, registering motor vehicles, and renewing existing registrations. The move is part of efforts to enhance tax compliance and streamline administrative processes across multiple sectors.
The Department of Inland Revenue has designated TIN as a prerequisite identification document for these transactions to ensure better record-keeping and tax administration. Citizens are advised to obtain their TIN in advance if they do not already hold one to avoid delays in completing these essential transactions.
The implementation of this requirement marks another step in Sri Lanka's broader push to formalize economic activities and improve tax collection mechanisms. Financial institutions and administrative bodies have been notified to enforce the TIN requirement across all applicable transaction categories.
