Sri Lanka-Maldives Business Council charts growth amid regional headwinds

The Sri Lanka-Maldives Business Council held its 18th annual general meeting, bringing together business leaders and stakeholders from both countries to assess the state of bilateral commercial relations and chart a course forward amid a complex regional environment.

The council, which serves as a key platform for promoting trade and investment between Colombo and Malé, discussed new opportunities for collaboration across sectors including tourism, fisheries, maritime trade, and financial services. Both economies have long recognised their complementary strengths, with geographic proximity and shared maritime interests forming the foundation for sustained business engagement.

However, participants acknowledged mounting challenges facing the bilateral relationship, including global economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and the need to modernise regulatory frameworks to facilitate smoother cross-border transactions. The discussions reflected broader concerns affecting South Asian trade corridors as the region navigates inflationary pressures and shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The council emphasised the importance of strengthening institutional mechanisms to resolve trade barriers and improve the business environment for companies operating in both jurisdictions. Attendees called for enhanced coordination between government agencies and the private sector to unlock untapped potential in emerging sectors and deepen economic integration.

The 18th AGM reinforced the council's commitment to fostering deeper commercial ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives, with officials noting that sustained dialogue and collaborative initiatives remain essential for achieving mutual prosperity in the coming years.
