Sri Lanka needs USD 400mn monthly for bilateral debt repayments by 2028

MP Ravi Karunanayake outlined Sri Lanka's substantial financial requirements for servicing bilateral debt obligations, stating that monthly accumulation of around USD 400 million would be necessary to commence repayments to bilateral creditors by 2028.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Karunanayake emphasized the importance of maintaining positive momentum while pursuing the country's reserve-building targets. He indicated that building reserves to USD 14.5 billion would be critical to ensuring the nation can meet its scheduled debt obligations.

The comments underscore the scale of Sri Lanka's debt servicing challenge as it works toward economic stabilization following its recent fiscal crisis. The government's ability to accumulate the required monthly reserves will be central to determining whether the repayment timeline can be achieved as planned.

The bilateral debt repayment framework represents a key component of Sri Lanka's broader debt restructuring efforts and international creditor negotiations.
