Sri Lanka President establishes panel to probe elephant Kawanthissa's death

President Dissanayake has appointed a special expert committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into all factors contributing to the death of Kawanthissa, the elephant found in the Siyambalangamuwa region. The initiative aims to establish clear accountability and understanding of the circumstances that led to the tusker's demise.

Beyond the immediate inquiry, the committee has been tasked with developing comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing the welfare and management of wild elephants across Sri Lanka. These protocols are intended to establish best practices for elephant protection and care in both wildlife sanctuaries and natural habitats.

The panel will also formulate recommendations for a national programme dedicated to the conservation and protection of tuskers and the broader elephant population. The committee is chaired by former Ministry Secretary A.H., bringing substantial government experience to the investigation.

This appointment reflects heightened official attention to wildlife management and elephant conservation in Sri Lanka, particularly following incidents involving the deaths of protected tuskers. The committee's findings are expected to inform policy decisions and operational guidelines for wildlife authorities moving forward.
