A total of 2,819 newly qualified nurses from the 2020 cohort received appointment letters on Sunday morning, marking their official entry into the Sri Lankan health service as Grade III nursing officers. The recruits completed their three-year Higher Diploma course at nursing colleges operating under the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.
The formal recruitment ceremony was conducted at Temple Trees, the official residence of the President, underscoring the government's emphasis on strengthening the nation's healthcare workforce. The appointments represent a significant expansion of nursing capacity across the country's health institutions.
In addition to the nurse recruitment drive, 76 existing health service personnel were promoted as part of the same initiative. The dual announcements reflect ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health to enhance staffing levels and create advancement opportunities within the medical and nursing professions.
The recruitment of the 2020 nursing cohort addresses longstanding workforce needs in Sri Lanka's health sector, which has faced capacity challenges in recent years. The new appointments are expected to be distributed across government hospitals and health facilities nationwide.
