Sri Lanka's continued placement at Tier 2 in the annual US State Department assessment reflects ongoing progress in the country's anti-trafficking efforts, according to government officials. The ranking, secured for the fifth consecutive year, is considered a significant indicator of the nation's commitment to addressing human trafficking across its borders and within its territories.

The Tier 2 classification places Sri Lanka among countries whose governments are making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking. The tiered ranking system, used by the US State Department since 2001, assesses nations based on their efforts to prevent trafficking, prosecute offenders, and protect victims.

Government authorities have attributed the sustained ranking to enhanced coordination between relevant agencies and the implementation of comprehensive anti-trafficking measures. The recognition comes as Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its legislative framework and enforcement mechanisms to combat all forms of human trafficking, including labour exploitation and sexual abuse.

The achievement marks a continued demonstration of the country's dedication to international human rights standards and bilateral cooperation in addressing transnational organised crime. Officials have indicated that maintaining this status will require ongoing vigilance and investment in victim support services, law enforcement training, and prevention programmes across the country.
