Sri Lanka rolls out digital system for driving licence medical certificates

The National Transport Medical Institute has begun implementing a digitised system for processing medical certificates essential to obtaining a driving licence in Sri Lanka. According to Prof. Clifford Perera, chairman of the institute, the platform is scheduled to commence operations on September 24.
The new digital framework represents a significant shift from traditional paper-based procedures. Under the system, applicants will be able to schedule medical examinations through online appointments rather than navigating conventional walk-in arrangements at medical centres.
The move is expected to reduce waiting times and improve efficiency in the licence application process. By digitising certificate issuance, authorities aim to create a more transparent and organised mechanism for processing the medical evaluations required under Sri Lankan driving regulations.
The initiative reflects broader efforts by transport authorities to modernise administrative procedures and enhance public service delivery. Officials have indicated that the system will maintain medical standards while offering greater convenience to licence applicants across the country.
