Sri Lanka Rules Out Presidential Pardon for Imprisoned Buddhist Monk

Agriculture Minister K. D. Lalkantha stated on Monday that authorities will not grant a presidential pardon for imprisoned Buddhist monk Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, dismissing an appeal made by fellow monks during a recent protest demonstration. Lalkantha made the announcement while addressing media representatives following an official event, indicating the government's firm position on the matter.

The Buddhist monks had organized a protest march to press their case for the monk's release, presenting their request to government officials. However, the minister's statement makes clear that no leniency will be extended through executive clemency in this case.

Gnanasara Thera remains incarcerated while serving his court-imposed sentence. The specifics of the charges against the monk were not detailed in the minister's remarks. His case has drawn attention from sections of the Buddhist community in Sri Lanka, who have sought his early release on multiple occasions.
