Sri Lanka's gross domestic product has rebounded to match 2018 figures, according to new assessments from the World Bank, marking a significant milestone in the country's economic recovery trajectory following years of contraction and hardship.

However, the international financial institution has tempered optimism about the island's economic prospects, emphasizing that the return to previous output levels does not necessarily signal a robust or sustainable recovery. The World Bank's cautionary stance reflects ongoing structural challenges facing the Sri Lankan economy, including persistent inflation, foreign exchange constraints, and debt servicing obligations.

The recovery to 2018 baseline levels represents a narrowing of the economic losses Sri Lanka sustained during its 2022 financial crisis and subsequent recovery period. Nevertheless, economists note that reaching previous output figures does not address underlying vulnerabilities or ensure momentum toward sustained growth in the medium term.

The World Bank's assessment underscores the need for continued structural reforms and policy interventions to strengthen Sri Lanka's economic fundamentals and create conditions for more durable expansion. Officials have stressed the importance of addressing fiscal imbalances and improving the business environment to attract investment and generate employment.
