Sri Lanka's July exports decline as tea and apparel sectors weaken

Sri Lanka's goods exports contracted in July, with overall shipments declining 1.3 percent compared to the same month last year, according to latest trade data. The decline was primarily driven by weakness in the apparel and tea sectors, which together account for a substantial portion of the nation's export revenues.

Tea exports, a cornerstone of Sri Lanka's agricultural export sector, experienced a particularly sharp downturn. Export earnings from tea fell 17.22 percent year-on-year to 116.73 million dollars in July, signaling persistent challenges in the global tea market and affecting foreign exchange inflows at a time when the country's economic recovery remains fragile.

The apparel sector, which serves as a major employment generator and export contributor, also showed signs of strain during the period. Weakened demand in key international markets has continued to weigh on orders and production volumes from Sri Lankan manufacturers.

These declines underscore the vulnerability of Sri Lanka's export-dependent economy to global market fluctuations, particularly in sectors where the country has long-standing competitive advantages.
