Sri Lanka's manufacturing sector sustains growth momentum in July

Manufacturing in Sri Lanka continued its expansion trajectory in July 2026, signalling sustained momentum in the industrial sector despite ongoing economic adjustments. The Purchasing Managers' Index, a key barometer of factory health, registered expansion during the month, with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka noting that all component indices contributed positively to the overall improvement.

The broad-based nature of the gains suggests strengthening demand across multiple manufacturing segments. The PMI captures sentiment among purchasing managers regarding production levels, new orders, employment, supplier delivery times, and inventory, with readings above 50 indicating expansion.

The positive July performance builds on previous months of industrial resilience, reflecting growing confidence among manufacturers. The expansion across all sub-indices points to simultaneous improvements in output, incoming demand, and labour market activity within the manufacturing sector.

The Central Bank's assessment underscores the sector's role as a potential growth driver for the wider economy. Manufacturing's sustained expansion comes as policymakers seek to rebuild economic momentum and diversify growth drivers following the country's economic stabilisation programme.
