Sri Lanka's PM says IMF reform agenda aligns with government priorities

The Prime Minister reiterated his government's commitment to the IMF programme during an interview with international broadcasters, emphasizing that external support mechanisms are reinforcing rather than imposing the country's economic direction.

Wickremesinghe stressed that the structural reforms outlined under the IMF agreement represent priorities that his administration had independently identified as necessary for economic stabilization. He highlighted that the alignment between the fund's conditions and government objectives demonstrates the coherence of Sri Lanka's recovery strategy.

The statement comes as the country continues implementing its bailout programme agreed with the IMF, which includes fiscal consolidation measures and institutional reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability. Officials have previously indicated that the programme framework complements longer-term development goals.

The Prime Minister's remarks signal efforts to frame the IMF engagement as a collaborative process supportive of domestically-driven policy, rather than external conditionality imposed upon the government during the country's economic crisis period.
