Sri Lanka's tech sector faces graduate surplus as job creation lags

Sri Lanka's technology education pipeline is generating graduates faster than the job market can absorb them, according to industry observers, pointing to a widening gap between supply and demand in the information and communication technology sector.

The surplus of tech-qualified professionals threatens to create a cohort of underemployed graduates unless the sector expands its capacity to create meaningful positions. Educational institutions across the country have ramped up their information technology programmes in recent years, responding to perceived demand for skilled workers in a sector seen as critical to economic growth.

However, job creation in the ICT sector has not kept pace with the influx of graduates entering the labour market. This imbalance raises questions about whether existing technology companies are expanding their workforce proportionally, or whether new ventures are being established at sufficient rates to employ those completing their qualifications.

Industry stakeholders are calling for greater alignment between education providers and employers to ensure curriculum development reflects actual market needs. The mismatch also highlights the need for businesses to grow more rapidly or for graduates to pursue opportunities in related sectors where their skills may be transferable.

Addressing this challenge will require coordinated effort from educational institutions, government agencies, and the private sector to either moderate graduate output or accelerate job creation within Sri Lanka's technology industry.
