The Asian Development Bank has approved a $200 million concessional loan to assist Sri Lanka in its post-cyclone recovery and reconstruction programme. The agreement marks a significant commitment to restoring infrastructure and livelihoods in areas severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
Cyclone Ditwah unleashed substantial damage across several regions of the island nation, disrupting economic activity, displacing communities, and causing widespread infrastructural damage. The scale of destruction necessitated substantial external financial support to accelerate the country's recovery timeline.
The ADB funds are expected to be deployed towards rebuilding critical infrastructure, restoring agricultural productivity, and supporting affected households and businesses. The loan will complement the government's domestic recovery efforts and international assistance already mobilised in response to the disaster.
Sri Lanka has increasingly relied on multilateral development institutions for financing major reconstruction initiatives following natural disasters. The latest ADB commitment underscores the international community's continued support for the nation's disaster resilience and economic stabilisation efforts.
