Sri Lanka secures $620m ADB loan for economic recovery program

Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a $620 million policy-based loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to advance the country's macro-recovery sector development program. The decision, made at a cabinet meeting on March 16, represents a significant step in implementing reforms aligned with the International Monetary Fund's Extended Fund Facility agreement.

The loan will be disbursed across five sub-programs targeting key areas of economic reform. Officials said the financing aims to strengthen Sri Lanka's economic resilience while creating broader opportunities for inclusive development across different sectors and population groups.

The ADB funding complements Sri Lanka's broader engagement with international financial institutions as the country works to stabilize its economy and implement structural reforms. The cabinet also authorized negotiations with the IMF to finalize arrangements under the Extended Fund Facility program, which provides additional support for countries undertaking comprehensive reform efforts.

The multi-pronged approach reflects international recognition of Sri Lanka's commitment to macroeconomic stabilization and longer-term development goals. Development partners including the ADB and IMF are playing central roles in supporting the country's recovery strategy through concessional financing and policy guidance.
