A deployment of 218 personnel departed Sri Lanka yesterday to reinforce the country's presence in Haiti's Gang Suppression Force (GSF). The contingent comprises 173 Sri Lanka Army personnel and 45 members of the Special Task Force (STF), a specialized police unit.
This latest deployment follows an earlier contingent of 280 personnel, further expanding Sri Lanka's role in the multilateral mission aimed at restoring security and stability to Haiti, which has been gripped by escalating gang violence and humanitarian challenges.
The deployment reflects Sri Lanka's commitment to international peacekeeping and humanitarian interventions. The country has positioned itself as an active participant in global efforts to address security crises, contributing military and law enforcement expertise to stabilize conflict-affected regions.
Haiti has faced unprecedented gang violence in recent years, with armed groups controlling significant portions of the capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. The Gang Suppression Force, comprising personnel from multiple nations, was established to combat this crisis and restore basic security services to civilians.
The additional deployment signals Sri Lanka's intention to sustain its commitment to the mission for the medium term, as international efforts to restore order in Haiti continue.
