Sri Lanka services exports surge 20% despite financial sector slump

Sri Lanka's services sector demonstrated resilience in July 2026 as overall exports expanded by 20.07 percent, offsetting weakness in the country's financial services industry.

The financial services subsector experienced a notable downturn, contracting 57.25 percent to $2.10 million for the month. This sharp decline represents a significant headwind for the services export category, which remains an important contributor to Sri Lanka's foreign exchange earnings.

Despite the setback in financial services, the broader services sector's double-digit growth indicates that other service categories—which typically include tourism, telecommunications, information technology, and professional services—expanded substantially during the period. These gains were sufficient to lift the overall services export figure well into positive territory.

The mixed performance underscores the divergent fortunes across Sri Lanka's services economy, reflecting both structural challenges in the financial sector and ongoing competitiveness in other service areas. The data suggests that continued reliance on diversified service exports remains critical for maintaining foreign exchange inflows amid global economic uncertainties.
