Sri Lanka, South Korea sign criminal legal assistance agreement

Sri Lanka's Cabinet has given the green light to a bilateral criminal legal assistance agreement with South Korea, marking a significant step in deepening law enforcement cooperation between the two nations.
The mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) will establish a formal framework enabling both countries to exchange evidence, witness testimony, and other critical information in criminal investigations and prosecutions. The pact covers a broad spectrum of offences and is designed to facilitate smoother coordination between Sri Lankan and South Korean judicial and law enforcement authorities.
Such agreements are instrumental in combating transnational crime, including human trafficking, drug smuggling, financial fraud, and organized criminal activity that often crosses international borders. By formalizing legal assistance procedures, the treaty eliminates bureaucratic delays and ensures that evidence gathered in one jurisdiction can be more readily utilized in the other.
The approval reflects Sri Lanka's commitment to strengthening international law enforcement partnerships and enhancing the country's capacity to address serious crimes with cross-border dimensions. The agreement is expected to be formally signed and ratified following the Cabinet's endorsement.
