Sri Lanka suspends central train services for weekend restoration work

Sri Lanka Railways has announced the temporary suspension of train services between Rambukkana and Peradeniya, as well as the Gampola line, on October 24 and 25 to undertake critical restoration work.

The suspension follows an earth slip near Kadugannawa Railway Station triggered by recent adverse weather. The geological movement has resulted in soil and debris collapsing onto the railway tracks, necessitating immediate intervention to ensure safe passage for future services.

The weekend closure will allow railway authorities to clear debris, assess structural integrity, and carry out necessary repairs to affected sections of the track. The work is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the reliability of the central highlands railway corridor, a key transport artery serving the Kandy district and surrounding regions.

Commuters and freight operators have been advised to make alternative arrangements during the suspension period. Sri Lanka Railways has indicated that services are expected to resume normal operations on Monday, subject to the successful completion of restoration work.
