Minister Rathnayake stated that the government remains committed to fulfilling the conditions of its existing IMF programme, which is scheduled to conclude in 2027. The extended facility, which was established following Sri Lanka's economic crisis, represents a critical support mechanism for the island nation's fiscal stabilisation efforts.
The minister's remarks underscore the government's determination to implement the structural reforms and fiscal consolidation measures required under the IMF agreement. Successful completion of the programme would signify that Sri Lanka has achieved the macroeconomic stability and institutional improvements necessary to operate independently without external financial support.
The four-year Extended Fund Facility has provided a framework for Sri Lanka to address its balance-of-payments difficulties, rebuild foreign reserves, and implement necessary economic adjustments. Progress on debt sustainability and revenue enhancement remains central to achieving the 2027 target date.
The anticipated exit from the IMF programme reflects government optimism regarding the trajectory of Sri Lanka's economic recovery, though challenges remain in maintaining fiscal discipline and implementing comprehensive structural reforms across the economy.
