Sri Lanka's government is focusing on digital transformation as a key pillar of its economic recovery and long-term growth strategy, with plans to substantially increase the sector's contribution to national output by 2030.
The 12 percent GDP target reflects a recognition among policymakers that digital industries—including information technology services, e-commerce, digital content creation, and technology-enabled businesses—offer significant potential for job creation and foreign exchange earnings.
Achieving this goal will require coordinated efforts across multiple fronts, including infrastructure development, workforce skills training, and regulatory reforms to support digital entrepreneurship and attract technology investments to the island nation.
The initiative comes as Sri Lanka seeks to diversify its economy beyond traditional sectors and position itself as a competitive digital hub in South Asia, building on existing strengths in IT services and business process outsourcing.
