Sri Lanka, Thailand to deepen labour ties and ease travel restrictions

Officials from Sri Lanka and Thailand have underscored the need to expedite labour cooperation frameworks and travel facilitation measures between the two countries, according to discussions held between the nations' representatives.

The two countries have identified the completion of a Labour Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding as a key priority, reflecting their commitment to managing worker mobility and employment standards across sectors. This framework is expected to provide greater protections for Sri Lankan workers in Thailand and Thai workers in Sri Lanka, while streamlining recruitment and employment procedures.

Parallel to labour initiatives, both nations are advancing talks on a visa exemption agreement aimed at boosting tourism and people-to-people exchanges. Such an arrangement would allow citizens of both countries visa-free or visa-on-arrival access, potentially increasing visitor numbers and strengthening cultural and economic ties.

The bilateral discussions reflect broader efforts by Sri Lanka to strengthen regional partnerships in South and Southeast Asia during a period of economic stabilisation. Thailand, a major regional economy and tourism destination, represents a significant partner for employment opportunities and trade expansion.

Both nations have committed to expediting negotiations on these agreements, with officials expected to coordinate further through diplomatic channels to finalise the outstanding details.
