Sri Lanka to distribute Rs. 6,000 stationery grants to 1.5 million students in 2027

Sri Lanka's cabinet has given the green light to extend its student stationery assistance scheme into 2027, allocating funds to support approximately 1.5 million schoolchildren with educational materials. The Rs. 6,000 per-student allowance forms part of a wider initiative to ease the financial burden on families and promote access to quality education across the island.

The programme, which commenced in 2025, has become an established component of the government's education support framework. The initiative targets students from economically vulnerable households registered under the country's social protection schemes, prioritizing those most in need of financial assistance.

For the upcoming academic year, authorities anticipate the allocation will benefit one million children from eligible families, though final beneficiary numbers may be adjusted based on programme requirements and budgetary considerations. The stationery allowance is designed to cover essential learning materials including notebooks, writing implements, and other supplies necessary for classroom participation.

Education officials have emphasized that the scheme aims to reduce dropout rates and improve attendance among disadvantaged students by removing financial barriers to school participation. The continuation of the allowance into 2027 reflects the government's commitment to sustaining education support amid broader economic challenges facing the nation.
